You can Make
a difference!

The rhinoceros is an amazing animal, but there aren’t many left in the world because they’re hunted for their horns, and the places where they live are quickly disappearing. Would you like to help keep rhinos safe? You can!! There’s a group that works hard to protect them, and many other endangered animals— it’s the World Wildlife Fund at www.worldwildlife.org/. It would be wonderful if you could raise money, build support for the animals online, or share your concern with your classmates and friends!

For teachers…

SYFRR provides a host of topics for class discussion and activities. Here are some to get started…

  • Who is the main character in the story? Who takes most of the actions and makes most of the decisions?

  • Do we ever really see the main character? Why do you think that is?

  • Can you think of another place the Red Rhinoceros might be taken? What do you think might happen?

  • Can you imagine another animal, or imaginary being (like a fairy, a gnome or a genie) that you might “find” like the rhinoceros in this story. What would happen if you took it home and tried to make it a pet or friend? What adventures would you have?

  • What feelings do you think the red rhinoceros is experiencing as it’s put into different situations? Why?

  • Why do you think the main character decided that keeping the rhinoceros was no longer possible? Do you agree with the decision to take it to the zoo? Why?
